AAUW was founded in 1881 and has influenced legislative debate on critical issues such as education, Social Security, gender discrimination, civil rights, reproductive choice, Title IX, pay equity, and health care reform. By joining the AAUW, you’ll be part of a vibrant community dedicated to breaking down educational and economic barriers, ensuring every women has a fair chance to succeed.
We hold several member meetings from September through May, typically at Kaleidoscope (The Gathering Place) in Hardy, VA. Guest speakers at these meetings have included artists, educators, administrators, financial experts and women of notable achievement from the local area. We cover a broad array of topics, including issues of education, finance, poverty, equity, legislation. Additionally, we focus on personal development as well as health and well-being topics. We also feature speakers who provide knowledge and insights about historical and other notable sites of interest in or around the tri-county area. And we are always seeking new recommendations for speakers, so please feel free to make suggestions!
Our special interest groups continue year-round. Our signature fundraiser is typically held in November and proceeds go directly to funding our scholarships and STEM activities.
In May, we hold a luncheon to award our scholarships to deserving individuals. It is an inspiring and moving event as our recipients (and their advocates) are so grateful for this financial assistance.
