The Community Outreach Group was established to initiate and participate in activities that support the AAUW mission in the lake community and surrounding areas. The efforts of the group strive to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.
This group will identify opportunities for community service for SMAAUW members. Many of us want to participate in community outreach activities but have family or other obligations that prevent our “jumping in with both feet.” Members of this group (and the branch as a whole) can participate as events and projects are announced according to their interest and schedule.
We are excited about our project beginning in March – Women’s History Month – reading and donating copies of Molly, by Golly! by Dianne Ochiltree to 2nd grade classrooms in Bedford, Franklin and Pittsylvania schools. Members will visit classrooms share the legend of Molly Williams, America’s first female firefighter. Copies of the book may be donated to the project and dedicated to a favorite teacher or loved one before it is given to the class. Click here to download the donation form for book(s) for the project! Instructions for mailing and payment are included on the form.
Ongoing Activities include:
Tutoring elementary school girls (and boys) at local schools
Assisting with Brownie and Girl Scout activities in Bedford and Franklin Counties
Supporting the Reality Store at local high schools walking students through financial life at 30
Other possible activities include:
Career speakers and or local business tours to explore careers
Providing books / readers for very young children
Helping with adult literacy
We are always looking for ideas. Suggestions of other activities are welcome.
