Looking for …

  • Interesting conversations?
  • Stimulating discussions?
  • Opportunities to learn?

Consider joining the Smith Mountain Branch of the American Association of University Women. Our branch meetings include speakers of interest from our region and beyond. Our Classics and International groups study authors and countries selected by the participants each year. Our Community Outreach group provides a way for members to join other branch members in either occasional or ongoing service projects.

AAUW was founded in 1881 and has influenced legislative debate on critical issues such as education, Social Security, sex discrimination, civil rights, reproductive choice, Title IX, pay equity, and health care reform. By joining AAUW, you belong to a community that breaks through educational and economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance.

To support the AAUW mission, the Branch awards scholarships to local college students. We hold four or five open member meetings from September through May at Waterfront Country Club. Study groups continue year-round. Guest speakers at Saturday meetings have included artists, educators, administrators, financial experts and women of notable achievement from the local area. Topics have included issues of education, poverty, equity, legislation, shared experiences and finance.

Anyone holding an associate degree or the equivalent, or bachelor’s degree or higher, from a regionally accredited institution is eligible for AAUW membership. Undergraduates who do not already hold a bachelor’s degree may join as student affiliates. Undergraduates who attend a college/university partner member institution may join AAUW as an e-student affiliate at no cost.
